I was the sole engineer of the app from its inception up until July 2014, produced in collaboration with Realmac Software.Ĭlear+ running on the iPad Simulator. While it required some upfront time investment, it is the better option in the long term. One particular aspect that slightly delayed the public release was the refactoring required to be able to share more than 95% of the code between the iPhone and iPad apps. While in development, we spent a significant amount of time experimenting with various interaction ideas while finally settling on the design that shipped. I wrote the first line of code in December 2013 when I started to prototype the custom text view used in the app.Īfter Clear for iPhone and Clear for Mac were released, it was time to bring Clear to the iPad. Secondly, I wanted to have full control over the animations (which are display link-based). This design decision allows me to decouple a lot of controller logic, so that it sits at the controller level of each element assistant, rather than having to reside in the views. The shape inspector is implemented using a custom list view which I had to create for two reasons: firstly, I wanted each list element to be visualised by a NSViewController, rather than follow NSTableView's approach of using plain NSViews. The canvas itself is Core Animation-based (via layer-backed views) which significantly improves performance and makes certain geometry-related operations trivial. Monodraw also marks the first document-based app that I have made, which is something I had on my todo list for a while. The line sweep direction and movement can be independently adjusted, as can the text position and alignment within the enclosing container. This gives me full control over the layout process (utilised by the text tool). I realised that there were no Mac apps that would allow me to easily visualise algorithms and data structures, so I decided to make one.Īs part of the development process, I created my own custom text engine based on CoreText. I decided to make Monodraw after stumbling upon some very nice ASCII diagrams on StackOverflow while researching data structures for a text editor. Mastery is a highly inspiring work, and one that is perfect for instilling inspiration, enthusiasm and self confidence. Obstacles are silencing the voice, due to either peer or parental pressure, opportunities that bring more money and less satisfaction, or denying the possibility of mastery through erroneous beliefs such as not having the right ability or make up. ![]() The way is finding the passion, something that generates interest and fascination, and a subsequent apprenticeship allowing the skill to develop, and eventually, for the apprentice to become their own person and develop mastery. ![]() Robert Greene hypothesizes that there are both ways to Mastery and obstacles to Mastery. Had he done so, he could have indeed been a concert pianist, but he would have been playing other people's music, and would never have been the Mozart forever remembered by history. For example, Mozart was under parental pressure to become a Concert Pianist, rather than a composer, because the former profession was by far the most lucrative. Greene contends that a unique application of their talent was necessary to achieve Mastery. The simple premise of Mastery is that the Masters in history, be they Einstein, Da Vinci, Mozart or Darwin, were no more talented than the average person, they didn't have uniquely wired brains, rather, they chose the appropriate passion and chose the appropriate circumstances to let that passion flourish, thereby achieving Mastery. While other Robert Greene books, brilliant in themselves, examine examples around a surrounding idea, Mastery presents the most unique exploration of an idea out of all his works. Definitely something to ponder more on though, and excellent food for thought.Īs a fan of Robert Greene's work, Mastery stands out as perhaps the most truly thought provoking exploration of an idea yet. I get the sense this would be clearer if I could see the headings etc. I actually think this book would work better as a hard copy - the organisation is not great and it sometimes feels like it loops around without quite landing on the point. Would have enjoyed greater diversity in ‘geniuses’ but the message is not fundamentally changed. I love that the message is fundamentally ‘none of you are special, it’s about knowing yourself and your own interests and through applying time, effort and patience you can achieve great things’. I found myself getting frustrated with his overuse of particular words (‘understand, detailed, deeply’) and something about the narrator sticks in your head - not necessarily in a bad way, just very American. Yes it repeats, but he does warn us of that at the beginning. This book has some excellent information and captivating examples. Told through Robert Greene's signature blend of historical anecdote and psychological insight and drawing on interviews with world leaders, Mastery builds on the strategies outlined in The 48 Laws of Power to provide a practical guide to greatness - and how to start living by your own rules. Then, they rewrote the rules as a reflection of their own individuality, blasting previous patterns of achievement open from within. The secret of their eventual greatness lies in a 'rigorous apprenticeship': by paying close and careful attention, they learnt to master the 'hidden codes' which determine ultimate success or failure. To see our uniqueness expressed in our achievements, we must first learn the rules - and then how to change them completely.Ĭharles Darwin began as an underachieving schoolboy, Leonardo da Vinci as an illegitimate outcast. ![]() Around the globe, people are facing the same problem - that we are born as individuals but are forced to conform to the rules of society if we want to succeed. However, positive correlation was shown between phenolics content (e.g., pigmentation), the requirement for oxidation and the activity of catechol oxidase in relation to pea seed dormancy, while epicatechin levels showed a significant positive correlation with soybean hardseededness. The underlying genetic controls in legumes have not been identified yet. The dormancy release mechanism primarily involves seed responses to temperature changes in the habitat, resulting in testa permeability to water. Physical dormancy (often called hardseededness), as found in legumes, involves the development of a water-impermeable seed coat, caused by the presence of phenolics- and suberin-impregnated layers of palisade cells. Different seed dormancy classes exist among plant species. Moreover, legume seed imbibition has a crucial role in cooking properties. Germination is one of the common sets of traits recorded in different crops and termed the “domestication syndrome”. ![]() These domestication-triggered changes represent adaptations to cultivation and human harvesting. ![]() In contrast, crop seeds germinate as soon as they are imbibed usually at planting time. In the wild, many seeds exhibit dormancy and will only germinate after exposure to certain environmental conditions. It determines the beginning of plant growth in natural or agricultural ecosystems. Key unanswered questions center on the mechanism for auxin-directed transcriptional repression and the identity of additional determinants of auxin response specificity. Mechanisms to tune the response to different auxin levels are emerging, as are first insights into how this single hormone can trigger diverse responses. In addition, studies are beginning to identify direct targets of the auxin-responsive transcription factors that underlie auxin modulation of development. Recent investigations have focused on transcriptional responses to auxin, providing novel insight into the functions of the domains of key transcription regulators in responses to the hormonal cue and prominently implicating chromatin regulation in these responses. Based on our findings, we propose an integrative model to describe the molecular mechanisms of the early stages of ovule development.Ībstract: Auxin is arguably the most important signaling molecule in plants, and the last few decades have seen remarkable breakthroughs in understanding its production, transport, and perception. Furthermore, our results suggest that the auxin response factor MONOPTEROS (MP/ARF5) may directly bind ANT, CUC1 and CUC2 and promote their transcription. We show that expression of the CUC1 and CUC2 genes is required to redundantly regulate expression of PINFORMED1 (PIN1), which in turn is required for ovule primordia formation. We demonstrate here that CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON 1 (CUC1), CUC2 and AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) have additive effects on ovule primordia formation. ![]() Ovule numbers ultimately determine the number of seeds that develop, and thereby contribute to the final seed yield in crop plants. I gave the leather shield to Silk because it makes bringing her to the frontlines easier. Robin killed him and took the leather shield. Too bad we've got healing magic and he does not. That's the awesome power of the leather shield. The mercenary double attacked Gray, causing 8 damage while recieving only 1. I did not make any melee attacks, since I suspect the mercenary can double attack everyone except maybe Cliff. The single remaining mercenary is hopelessly deep in the mountains, so there's a lot of time to recover and prepare.ġ7/27 HP. With Warp spell, Silk can now transport any adjacent unit to any square on the map. It is almost necessary to get one character later in the game and it provides considerable strategic advantage in all battles. Warp spell, while costing 8 HP to cast is an immensely useful tool. (Level 7, Magic +1, Skill +1, HP +1, Warp spell) One was killed by Gray's counterattack and the only that attacked Silk only succeeded in giving her a level. The enemy is almost routed, with every single bandit wounded and some already retreating. The one thief that can attack Silk probably will, but since her attack drains health, it's not a problem. The frontliners are also doing well, taking little damage while keeping Robin and Silk safe. The archer missed Cliff while one thief committed suicide by attacking Silk. (Level 5, Skill +1, HP +1) All the direct attack characters got scratched, losing one or two HP each.Įnemy moves to attack, but they're generally ineffectual. The enemies are faster than I expected, so I stand and wait in order to get first strike.Įveryone attacks, two thieves are dead and Luka had gained a level. I move all units forward, nothing worth screenshotting. The mercenary moved south, toward the mountains. General moving forward, nothing exciting.Įnemy does the same thing as us. On the bright side, after killing him, we get the shield for ourselves. The leather shield in question gives +3 to defence and it is enough to make this enemy much harder to kill. They generally provide bonuses to defence although there are a few special ones. Shields are one type of equippable items in FE2. Robin got promoted into Mage and gained +1 Defence, +4 HP and a Fire spell.Ĭliff got promoted into Mercenary and gained +6 Skill, +4 Speed and +2 HP.Ĭliff is going to be very useful from now on while Gray and Robin are probably going to be mediocre and maybe replaced by better characters. Gray got promoted into Cavalier and gained +1 Speed and Defence. This basically means that promoting characters early is not a bad idea, though it is usually better to wait. If they do have worse statistics, promoting them increases the statistics to class minimum. If a promoted character has better statistics than the class they promote to, they only gain HP when promoted. ![]() Now, I did not show the villagers' results and that's because of the way promoting characters to better classes works in FE2. The sad thing is that Skill is completely useless to Silk since magic attacks are not affected by it. Silk: Level+5, Skill+3, Magic+3, HP+2, Speed+1Īlm's and Silk's results are good Luka's are mediocre. Luka and Alm get a level as well, because why not? I'm also grinding Silk to level 6, to make her a little more capable in combat and able to earn experience in real battles without much risk. I just continuously hunt down the poor thieves in the cave until all the villagers are level 6, more than they need for promoting, but that should be no problem. We're going to get an archer at the end of the next update, so don't worry. The voting showed a lot of support for mage and cavalier with mercenary a little behind them. I'm going to show off two battles, but we're going to do some grinding first. I should get out one, maybe two more updates before the New Year, so stay tuned. This is fine most of the times but certainly not recommended during the early parts of the game as while collecting gold and items during my first playthrough, I forgot to build farms and other food-related buildings which resulted in my town running out of food and I had to start a new game. These quests keep popping up and sometimes I forgot to visit the town to check on things as I went from quest to quest collecting gold and items from dead enemies. Sometimes the townspeople will also want to meet you and give you small tasks regarding their work locations or random tasks around the town or its surroundings. They are usually pretty simple as sometimes you are required to visit a location and clear out the enemies. The quests in HammerHelm are short and quite fun. As you play the game and complete quests, your dwarf will level up and you can add more skills to your dwarf’s arsenal to make him/her stronger and more efficient. You are given the option to create your own dwarf at the start of the game however it’s just cosmetic and does not affect the gameplay in any way. It combines the strategic aspect of building your own town and managing your people with exploring the island and collecting resources and clearing out caves and ruins of dangerous monsters. David Cameron, David Miliband and Boris Johnson all said it was last play they had been to see. Peter Morgan's Frost/Nixon was the most popular play which is unsurprising, since the drama is practically an episode of Newsnight. The results reveal a mixture of musicals, political drama, high culture and - in John Prescott's case - an am dram starring scouts and guides. That prompted the Guardian to ask key MPs which plays, films or concerts they had recently attended. In the wake of Tony Blair's speech on culture at Tate Modern, in London, this week, a Downing Street spokesman admitted the prime minister did not "get as much time as he would like to enjoy the arts", had last been to the theatre in December to see the Sound of Music, and preferred "to watch DVDs at home". ![]() He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something.
